Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction Surgery, medically known as reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure used to remove excess tissue, fat, and skin from the breast area to create a more desirable look. If a patient has larger breasts, they may experience back pain and discomfort. A breast reduction procedure can help ease discomfort and help achieve a proportionate breast size that best fits your body frame. Breast Reduction Surgery can also restore your overall self-image and self-confidence, as well as the ability to enjoy activities that may have caused discomfort before like exercising.

Breast Reduction Surgery really doesn’t have an age limit, sometimes even teenagers can elect to have these procedures if the surgeon believes the potential patient meets surgical criteria.

You may reconsider this procedure if your future plans include childbirth or weight loss. Sometimes childbirth and weight loss can cause a shift in your breast shape, which can cause you to need additional surgery in the future.

Why Should You Choose a Breast Reduction Procedure?

  • Experiencing nerve pain.
  • Restricts your activity and makes exercising uncomfortable.
  • Creates chronic rashes and skin irritation around and under the breasts.
  • Uneven larger breasts can reduce self-esteem and self-image.
  • Discomfort in wearing clothes and bras that don’t fit properly.
  • Severe pain in the back, neck, and shoulders that could require medical attention.
Breast Reduction - Plastic Surgery

Breast Reduction Surgery generally isn’t recommended if:

  • you smoke and are unable to stop smoking during the healing process.
  • you have health conditions such as heart problems or diabetes.
  • you are over-weight.
  • you would like to avoid scars on the area of the breasts.

If you have any concerns about the above items speak with your surgeon about what can be done to help you reach your goals for this surgical procedure.

What Is the Recovery Timeframe for a Breast Reduction Procedure?

When your Breast Reduction Procedure is complete, your surgical team will provide dressings and bandages that will be applied to the incision area. You may also have a drainage tube that will be placed under the skin to help drain any excess blood or fluid. By doing this, it helps with the healing process to reduce swelling and bruising. Based on your surgeon’s instructions, you may also be allowed to wear a support bra or bandage that will also help with the healing process. Most patients can return to work within 1 week, with restrictions on strenuous activities for up to 3 weeks.
